Commonly, engineers will run sessions in studios they don't normally work in, maybe just for a day. They'll have a recording session, and they want to bring in external hard drives. The thought is that it would be convenient if the engineer could bring in an external hard drive, record to it, and then take that drive with them at the end of the session, perhaps to another studio, or home to work on the tracks.
